This public-private partnership with Mecklenburg County is a wonderful opportunity for Carolina Raptor Center to secure a new home and create a facility that will attract many more visitors from near and far.  – Bruce Roberts, Campaign Cabinet

The Case for Destination

There is no denying it – Carolina Raptor Center is unlike any other place in Mecklenburg County. In fact, it is unlike any other attraction in the Southeastern United States. That is because Carolina Raptor Center is one of just a handful of centers for the conservation of raptors in North America. It is an organization deserving of a facility as unique as the programming it provides.

For the past 30 years, Carolina Raptor Center has been dedicated to environmental stewardship and the conservation of birds of prey. The organization has served hundreds of thousands of people both on-site at its campus in Latta Nature Preserve and out in a broad geographic region covering areas of North Carolina and South Carolina.

Through a partnership with Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation, Carolina Raptor Center is thrilled to be a part of a once-in-a-generation project, anchoring a state-of-the-art interpretive environmental education center at Latta Nature Preserve.

As the most popular destination for visitors within Latta Nature Preserve, Carolina Raptor Center will bring even more people to its neighboring programs through expanded shared facilities.  It is estimated that usage will triple, growing to more than 100,000 annual visitors and participants.

Facility features will include:

  • Modern facility design by Charlotte-based BB+M Architecture
  • Interactive indoor exhibits
  • Raptor care observation
  • Technology-enabled indoor education and program spaces
  • On-site visitor food service and gift shop
  • Expanded learning facilities, group space and volunteer work space
  • Increased parking and improved visitor amenities
